Job summary

Cranemasters is seeking a hands-on, experienced Assistant Manager to help lead field operations supporting emergency derailment response, specialty lifting, railcar repair, and track maintenance projects. You will lead from the front—supporting Supervisors, ensuring safe and efficient project execution, and working directly with customers in high-impact, time-sensitive environments.

Qualifications

• Experience in railroad or heavy equipment operations.
• Knowledge of DOT and FRA regulations.
• Ability to operate cranes and heavy machinery.
• Proven leadership of field teams.
• Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to read crane load charts and rigging requirements.

Responsibilities

• Lead and support Supervisors in field projects safely, efficiently, and in compliance with DOT/FRA regulations.
• Assign work, monitor progress, ensure on-time, on-budget delivery aligned with customer expectations.
• Provide hands-on leadership, coaching, and respond to emergency service calls as needed.
• Conduct site visits to ensure safety, quality, and operational efficiency; identify risks.
• Build relationships with railroad customers, field partners, and regulatory agencies.
• Train and develop team members; support hiring and performance evaluations.
• Assist with workforce planning, budgeting, and forecasting.
• Ensure accurate reporting of payroll, labor hours, equipment usage, and project docs.
• Coordinate maintenance or replacements of equipment.
• Contribute to business growth through customer engagement and industry events.
