Job summary

Qualifications

• ICC certification demonstrating knowledge of Federal, State, and local laws, codes and ordinances relating to building construction.
• Understanding of the accepted safety standards, testing procedures and methods of construction.
• Principles and techniques of building inspection work.
• Basic understanding of the plan checking process.
• Computer knowledge and skills are desirable.

Responsibilities

• Inspect new buildings and alterations for code compliance.
• Explain building regulations to the public, contractors, designers, and owners.
• Identify and solve complex problems with developers, engineers, architects, and others regarding code requirements and alternatives.
• Field questions regarding building requirements.
• Perform independent analyses during inspection.
• Advise planning, engineering, or code enforcement on building issues.
• Read and interpret codes and apply good judgment.
• Write correction notices and inspection reports.
• Analyze building plans and codes for accuracy.
• Enforce codes with impartiality.
• Apply technical knowledge of building trades.
• Perform duties in accordance with OSHA standards.
