Job summary

The Port of San Francisco is seeking a college student intern to support its Occupational Health and Safety programs. The intern will assist with fieldwork, maintain safety supplies and equipment, and conduct site visits.

The intern will meet with employees, maintain safety databases, help coordinate training, and participate in ergonomic assessments while traveling to various San Francisco locations. This is a temporary, exempt, at-will internship.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in a program at an accredited community college or university leading to a degree in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, kinesiology, ergonomics, nursing or related fields.
• Completed at least 48 semester units or 72 quarter units by the application filing deadline.
• Interest or knowledge of occupational safety and health.
• Ability to work with a variety of people in a team setting and work independently with appropriate supervision.

Responsibilities

• Meets with employees to follow-up on safety concerns.
• Maintains databases such as hearing conservation, medical monitoring appointments, and safety data sheets.
• Assists with coordination of safety and health training programs.
• Reviews and updates training content and employee training files.
• Participates in ergonomic assessments.
• Conducts basic safety inspections.
• Assists in ordering and tracking safety purchases.
• Assists with industrial hygiene monitoring.
• Develops draft Codes of Safe Practices for maintenance operations.
• Performs other duties as required.
