Job summary

TEKsystems is seeking a Fiber Optic Construction Technician for an onsite contract role in Omaha, NE. Responsibilities include placing cables, installing infrastructure, splicing, terminating and testing fiber networks, and maintaining safety and documentation practices.

Responsibilities

• Place cables: Install new aerial and buried fiber optic cables according to project maps and blueprints.
• Set infrastructure: Install vaults, pedestals, handholes, and splice enclosures.
• Operate equipment: Drive and operate trenchers, cable plows, directional drills, bucket trucks.
• Splice fibers: Align and join glass fibers using fusion splicers.
• Prepare closures: Strip, prep, and seal splice cases per manufacturers.
• Terminate lines: Connect cables to panels and ODFs.
• Test signal strength: Use OTDR, power meters, and light sources to measure loss.
• Locate faults: Identify breaks, bends, or impairments and repair.
• Verify continuity: End-to-end testing before network activation.
• Follow safety: Adhere to OSHA and safety regs; update GIS data and as-built maps.

Job description

A Fiber Optic Construction Technician builds, installs, maintains, and repairs the physical outside plant (OSP) and inside infrastructure required for high-speed fiber optic communication networks.

Network Construction & Installation

• Place cables: Install new aerial and buried fiber optic cables according to project maps, staking sheets, and engineering blueprints.
• Set infrastructure: Install and secure vaults, pedestals, handholes, and splice enclosures.
• Operate equipment: Drive and operate specialized heavy machinery, such as trenchers, cable plows, directional drills, and bucket trucks.

Splicing & Termination

• Splice fibers: Align and join delicate glass fibers using fusion splicers inside enclosures or mobile splicing labs.
• Prepare closures: Strip, prep, and seal fiber splice cases from manufacturers like Corning, CommScope, and Tyco.
• Terminate lines: Connect fiber cables to distribution panels, patch panels, and optical distribution frames (ODFs). (1, 2)

Testing & Troubleshooting

• Test signal strength: Use an Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR), power meters, and light source test kits to measure dB loss and signal integrity.
• Locate faults: Identify breaks, bends, or impairments in the optical line and execute timely repairs.
• Verify continuity: Perform end-to-end testing before final network activation.

Safety & Documentation

• Follow safety protocols: Adhere to strict OSHA and company safety regulations, especially when working near active traffic, utility poles, or heavy machinery.
• Update records: Record as-built maps, update GIS data, and log completed daily construction reports.
• Restore sites: Clean and restore work areas and landscape back to original conditions after excavation or digging

Pay And Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $40.00/hr.
