Job summary

TEKsystems is seeking a Fiber Optic Construction Technician for a contract role in Omaha, NE, focusing on building, installing, maintaining, and repairing the outside plant and internal fiber infrastructure for high‑speed networks.

Responsibilities include laying aerial and buried cables, installing vaults and splice enclosures, operating trenchers and bucket trucks, splicing fibers, terminating lines, and performing OTDR testing with thorough documentation of as-built GIS records.

Responsibilities

• Place cables: Install new aerial and buried fiber optic cables according to project maps, staking sheets, and engineering blueprints.
• Set infrastructure: Install and secure vaults, pedestals, handholes, and splice enclosures.
• Operate equipment: Drive and operate specialized heavy machinery, such as trenchers, cable plows, directional drills, and bucket trucks.
• Splice fibers: Align and join delicate glass fibers using fusion splicers inside enclosures or mobile splicing labs.
• Prepare closures: Strip, prep, and seal fiber splice cases from manufacturers like Corning, CommScope, and Tyco.
• Terminate lines: Connect fiber cables to distribution panels, patch panels, and optical distribution frames (ODFs).
• Test signal strength: Use an OTDR, power meters, and light source test kits to measure dB loss and signal integrity.
• Locate faults: Identify breaks, bends, or impairments in the optical line and execute timely repairs.
• Verify continuity: Perform end-to-end testing before final network activation.
• Follow safety & documentation: Adhere to OSHA safety regs and update GIS data and daily construction reports.
