Job summary

Artemis ARC seeks a full-time Technical Writer to support the Federal Highway Administration’s RD&T at TFHRC in McLean, VA. The role bridges engineers and audiences, translating complex engineering concepts into clear, publishable content following federal standards.

The position requires 5–10 years of technical writing experience, a relevant degree, and strong editing and publication skills; hybrid onsite work (2 days/week) at TFHRC or FHWA HQ.

Qualifications

• 5-10 years of professional experience in technical writing, editing, and publishing.
• Bachelor’s degree in Technical Writing, English, Communications, Journalism, or related field.
• Demonstrated expertise applying the GPO Style Manual and Chicago Manual of Style; ensure Section 508 accessibility.
• Experience in transportation sector preferred.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a public trust clearance.

Responsibilities

• Research, write, and edit content for technical reports, magazine features, newsletters, fact sheets, brochures, user manuals, and other research communications products.
• Collaborate with engineers, researchers, and subject matter experts to translate complex concepts for technical and general audiences.
• Provide substantive editing, copyediting, and proofreading across production stages.
• Verify technical accuracy through interviews, research, and fact-checking; ensure figures integrate with text.
• Ensure content conforms to style guides and accessibility requirements.
• Manage copyright permissions and attributions for written materials.
• Oversee lifecycle of documents from outline to final publication with version control.
• Coordinate review and approval with FHWA contacts and external stakeholders.
