Job summary

MARDERS in Bridgehampton, NY, seeks a Farm Manager/Trees & Shrubs to lead our on-site operations from cultivation to installation. You will manage a multi-person crew, optimize planting practices, and uphold soil health and organic growing standards within our premier landscape services and retail business.

The role requires extensive arboriculture knowledge, nursery management experience, and strong leadership.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Horticulture, Arboriculture, Agriculture, or related field.
Minimum of 5 years hands-on experience in large-scale nursery management with trees and shrubs.
Proven ability to lead and motivate a team in a physically demanding environment.
Comprehensive knowledge of arboriculture, nursery production, soil science, and large-scale composting principles.
Proficient in safe operation of heavy equipment (loaders, skid steers, tractors).
Strong verbal communication skills and ability to train/direct crew members.
Experience managing both farm and installation crews.
Five+ years in nursery production system experience.
Proficiency in farm management software and inventory systems.
Strong analytical skills for data-driven decisions to improve tree growth and nursery productivity.
Knowledge of irrigation systems and water efficiency.
ISA Certified Arborist or equivalent certification is preferred.
New York pesticide applicator license knowledge.
Experience with large tree transplanting equipment (drum lace).
Continuing education in nursery management or soil health is desirable.

Responsibilities

Lead and manage a team of ~7 employees across farm and small installation crew.
Create and manage daily and weekly schedules for crews.
Oversee specimen tree planting projects with high standards for planting and safety.
Coordinate in-house and subcontractor service providers.
Implement and monitor a complete care schedule for diverse plant material.
Oversee all aspects of the specimen tree farm: planting, irrigation, pruning, fertilizing, pest management, nursery maintenance.
Harvest large specimen trees with proper root ball preservation for B-and-B operations.
Train crew on planting and staking techniques for tree health.
Maintain high-quality standards for plant material ready for sale or installation.
Develop and implement a comprehensive care program for all farms.
Ensure plants are grown to Marders’ quality standards.
Manage compost program including intake, turning, monitoring, and product quality.
Operate and maintain farm equipment and irrigation infrastructure.
Enforce safety protocols and compliance with regulations.
