Job summary

Metropolitan Ministries in Tampa, FL, seeks a Family Support Community Specialist to provide mobile and site-based assessments, resource navigation, and direct services to families in need. You will determine eligibility, connect to resources, and maintain HMIS documentation with a compassionate, mission-driven approach.

Responsibilities

Job Functions:

The Family Support Community Specialist provides mobile and site-based client assessment, resource navigation, prevention assistance, and direct services within targeted communities. This role determines eligibility for services, connects individuals and families to internal and community resources, and supports prevention and diversion efforts. The position maintains accurate documentation and data entry in HMIS, ensures compliance with organizational and funding requirements, safeguards client confidentiality, and collaborates with community partners, volunteers, and internal teams to deliver compassionate, mission-focused services. The Family Support Community Specialist also supports community outreach initiatives, organizational events, strategic objectives, and other duties as assigned.

Essential Responsibilities:

• 1. Conduct client assessments, determine eligibility, and provide resource navigation, referrals, and direct services in accordance with Metropolitan Ministries policies and program guidelines.
• 2. Administer prevention, diversion, financial assistance, and other approved support services while ensuring compliance with funding and program requirements.
• 3. Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential client records, case documentation, data entry, and reporting within HMIS and other required systems.
• 4. Deliver services in a compassionate, efficient, and mission-focused manner while maintaining effective client flow and stewardship of organizational resources.
• 5. Serve as the primary Metropolitan Ministries representative at assigned community locations, fostering positive relationships with clients, volunteers, and community partners.
• 6. Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to support outreach initiatives, targeted neighborhood strategies, community events, and resource coordination efforts.
• 7. Train, support, and coordinate volunteers to enhance service delivery and promote a positive client experience.
• 8. Monitor program activities to ensure alignment with approved budgets, grant requirements, organizational standards, and service objectives.
• 9. Support organizational initiatives, including holiday programs, special events, fundraising activities, and community engagement efforts.
• 10. Participate in Metropolitan Ministries’ events and holiday efforts including holiday tent registration and distribution. Participate in Bridge Builders and other fundraising events when needed.
• 11. Meet personal goals and actively contribute to the achievement of team and organizational targets/goals as stated on Strategic Plan. Support the team in other tasks as assigned.

Requirements

Education and Experience:

Associates Degree Social Work, Human Services, Psychology, Counseling, business or a related field required. Equivalent combinations of education, professional experience, and volunteer service in the social services field may be considered. Candidates should possess experience working with individuals and families experiencing homelessness, housing instability, poverty, or other barriers to self-sufficiency. Demonstrated knowledge of community resources, case management principles, and client assessment practices is preferred. Must demonstrate a commitment to ongoing professional development by participating in relevant trainings, seminars, conferences, and continuing education opportunities to enhance knowledge, skills, and best practices related to homelessness prevention and supportive services.

Skills Requirements:

Requires heart for ministry and comfort working with poor and homeless families. Requires understanding of poverty, a high degree of maturity, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to work with low socio-economic and diverse populations facing crises professionally and diplomatically. The ability to deescalate clients with heightened emotions is preferred. Ability to work as part of a team within a multi-disciplinary framework. Ability to manage other employees and volunteers. Demonstrates high computer literacy with knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Teams. Requires oral and written communication skills and the ability to write reports and conduct and participate in meetings. Bi-lingual is a plus but not required.

Physical Requirements:

Must have adequate hearing and speaking ability. Must be capable of working outdoors in sunlight and higher temperatures on occasion. Must have the physical, emotional, and spiritual stamina to handle job-related issues and stress. Must be able to lift 20 lbs. or more.

Other:

Must demonstrate legal authorization to work in the United States. Must pass required background pre-employment screening. Must be willing to travel to designated partner sites and have reliable transportation. Must be able to communicate effectively in English.
