The Family Office Controller oversees the day-to-day financial operations of a single-family office and an organization focused on impact investing and philanthropy. This role supports the Principals, their children, and the CFO and requires close collaboration across the family office team and its affiliates.
The Controller will oversee one junior accountant or accounts payable professional. The ideal candidate will have a roll-up-your-sleeves approach and work in an organized, relaxed, and efficient manner. This individual should be comfortable managing multiple priorities while maintaining a high level of attention to detail, discretion, and professionalism.
This role is best suited for a professional with experience in a family office, private banking, investment fund, closely held or family-owned business, or similar environment, who brings strong financial fundamentals and a proactive, service-oriented approach.
- Provide support to the CFO and family office leadership across all aspects of accounting and finance.
- Lead general ledger accounting and financial reporting across all family-related entities in a timely and accurate manner.
- Prepare monthly and annual financial statements.
- Manage investment accounting and monitoring and prepare investment reports.
- Assist with the implementation of new technology related to general ledger and investment reporting.
- Establish and maintain accounting and operational processes and controls.
- Manage cash balances, cash flow forecasting, and liquidity planning.
- Oversee banking relationships and treasury processes.
- Supervise an accounts payable / junior accountant and work closely with them on expense processing.
- Manage personal, household, trust, and operating company expenses with professionalism and confidentiality.
- Coordinate with external tax advisors to ensure timely and accurate filings.
- Manage, build, and support budgets, expense tracking, and financial planning processes.
- Ability to juggle multiple requests simultaneously and track, manage, and deliver significant ad hoc projects as requested by the Principals.
- Maintain investment literacy, including monitoring, reconciliation, and reporting of investment activity.
- Work independently, manage recurring deadlines, and maintain strict confidentiality.
Additional Qualifications
- 7–12+ years of progressive experience in a family office, closely held or family-owned business, fund, or similar environment.
- CPA required or currently on the CPA track.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Tax, or a related field.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong technology skills, including Microsoft Excel, Office Suite, Canva, and AI tools.
- Proficiency with accounting software, including QuickBooks and Addepar. Experience with a true general ledger system, particularly in connection with a software migration or implementation, is a plus.
- Experience and/or exposure to direct investments, impact investing, philanthropy, tax, and/or investment activities is a plus.
- Experience with consolidations and GAAP financial reporting.
- Demonstrated ability to be flexible and resourceful in a complex and lean environment.
- Strong judgment, discretion, and impeccable integrity.
- Ability to work in the office five days per week.
- Must be comfortable working in an office where dogs may be present in the future.
