Maryland School for the Deaf in Frederick is seeking substitute teachers to support daily instruction on an as-needed basis for the 2026-2027 school year. You will follow prepared lesson plans, supervise students, and maintain a positive learning environment.
Fluency in American Sign Language and written English is required. A high school diploma with 60 college credits or a verified former teacher is expected; a bachelor’s degree is preferred.
Anticipated openings for the 2026-2027 School Year (September 2026 - January 2027). The Maryland School for the Deaf provides an inclusive, language-rich environment for deaf and hard of hearing students from birth through age 21. Rooted in a bilingual education approach, we ensure full access to American Sign Language and English across comprehensive academic, extracurricular, and student life programs. In partnership with families and communities, we empower students to think critically and develop a sense of self and belonging. We are currently accepting applications to create a pool of qualified individuals who can work on an as needed basis to temporarily continue the lessons planned for the children on any given day.

Substitute teaching assignments may change based on the needs of the school. A substitute teacher may be asked to accept assignments outside his/her background or educational training. They may also be asked to cover classes during a planning period. It is not expected that a substitute teacher be able to teach new or unfamiliar materials, but rather make every attempt to follow the lesson plan and manage student behavior in the most positive way possible.
Follow the lesson plan left by the teacher and ensure students complete all assigned tasks, maintain a safe environment, keep students under direct supervision at all times, leave information concerning the day's activities for the teacher, and maintain strict confidentiality of students and school personnel information.
Applications will be prescreened before candidates are invited to an interview. As an equal opportunity employer, MSD is committed to recruiting, retaining, and promoting employees who are reflective of the State's diversity.
Please note that all contractual agreements and staffing allocations are subject to adjustment based on student enrollment and operational needs.
