Job summary

The Salvation Army in New York operates shelters and services, and seeks a Porter to support facility cleanliness, safety, and resident well‑being. You will complete cleaning tasks, handle simple work orders, and assist with minor repairs and moving belongings.

This position requires physical endurance, ability to lift up to 50 pounds, and a valid NYS driver's license. You may participate in snow removal, ground cleanup, and special projects as needed.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED is required.
• Must be able to lift at least fifty pounds and stand for an eight-hour shift.
• Experience with a disadvantaged population is a plus.
• Ability to take and follow instructions and perform tasks with minimal supervision.
• Valid NYS Driver's License is strongly preferred.
• Willing to become certified as a Fire Safety Coordinator is strongly desired.

Responsibilities

• Reports to Facility Manager about janitorial and facility issues.
• Cleans and sanitizes vacant units within DHS regulatory timeline (4 hours post discharge).
• Cleans public areas and workspaces as assigned.
• Completes work orders and maintains floors, bathrooms, and general areas.
• Drives agency vehicle as needed and logs mileage.
• Assists with moving clients' belongings and with ground cleanup/snow removal as assigned.
• Stores and retrieves deliveries and supplies; participates in special projects.
