Job description

Facilities Plant Mechanic I

Performs technical and skilled trades work in the maintenance, repair and replacement of machinery and equipment in a water and/or wastewater treatment plant; does related work as required. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the assigned supervisor.

Facilities Plant Mechanic II

Performs intermediate technical and skilled trades work in the maintenance, repair and replacement of machinery and equipment in a water and/or wastewater treatment plant; does related work as required. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the assigned supervisor.

Facilities Plant Mechanic III

Performs difficult technical and skilled trades work in the maintenance, repair and replacement of machinery and equipment in a water and/or wastewater treatment plant; does related work as required. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Field Supervisor. Supervision may be exercised over a small crew.

Facilities Plant Mechanic I Responsibilities
  • Cleans, services and lubricates pumps, motors and related treatment equipment (15%)
  • Dismantles and repairs various plant equipment such as gauges, grit collectors, conveyors, mechanical grinders, engines, blowers, gas and air compressors and chlorinators (20%)
  • Performs complete overhauls of water and wastewater treatment machinery and equipment including chemical feeders, conveyors, chlorinators and pumps of all types (15%)
  • Maintains and installs liquid chemical feed pumps (10%)
  • Replaces control valves and valve position indicating lights (10%)
  • Makes minor and emergency repairs (10%)
  • Prepares records and reports on plant operations (10%)
  • Performs minor electrical repairs (5%)
  • Serves on the Utilities Maintenance emergency on-call rotation (5%)
Facilities Plant Mechanic II Responsibilities

  • Trains and instructs unskilled semi-skilled workers (15%)
  • Requisitions necessary equipment and materials (10%)
  • Maintains time and material records (5%)
  • Prepares sample work reports (5%)
  • Serves on the Utilities Maintenance emergency on-call rotation (5%)
Facilities Plant Mechanic I Qualifications

General knowledge of the installation, repair and maintenance of the mechanical, hydraulic and electrical components of water and wastewater treatment and pump station equipment; general knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions of the work; skill in the use and care of tools of the trade; ability to determine improper operation of water and wastewater pumping and treatment equipment and to take proper remedial action; ability to follow oral and written directions; ability to work under adverse conditions.

Facilities Plant Mechanic II Qualifications

Thorough knowledge of the installation, repair and maintenance of the mechanical, hydraulic and electrical components of water and wastewater treatment and pump station equipment; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions of the work; skill in the use and care of tools of the trade; welding and fabrication skills; ability to determine improper operation of water and wastewater pumping and treatment equipment, and to take proper remedial action; ability to follow oral and written directions; ability to work under adverse conditions.

Facilities Plant Mechanic III Qualifications

Thorough knowledge of the installation, repair and maintenance of the mechanical, hydraulic and electrical components of water and wastewater treatment and pump station equipment; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions of the work; skill in the use and care of tools of the trade; welding and fabrication skills; ability to determine improper operation of water and wastewater pumping and treatment equipment and to take proper remedial action; ability to follow oral and written directions; ability to work under adverse conditions; thorough knowledge of the maintenance, repair and construction practice in the area assigned; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work; ability to assign and supervise the work of unskilled and semi-skilled workers; ability to prepare reports; ability to establish effective working relationships with others.

Education/Experience

Graduation from high school or equivalent and moderate experience in water and/or wastewater treatment plant maintenance, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms.
  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces.
  • Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.
  • Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
  • Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.

  • Repetitive Motions: Substantial movements of the wrists, hands and/or fingers.

2. The physical requirements of this position:

  • Very Heavy Work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally.

3. The visual acuity requirements:

  • The worker is required to have visual acuity to perform mechanical or skilled trades tasks.

4. The conditions the worker will be subject to in this position:

  • The worker is subject to various environmental conditions.
Special Requirements/Additional Information

North Carolina AWWA-WEA Class I Maintenance Technologist Certification within 18 months of employment. NIMS 100, 200, and 700 training within twelve months of hire.

Must possess a valid appropriate driver's license with acceptable driving history.

Drug screening and criminal background check required.
