Job summary

Pacific Lutheran University is hiring a facilities technician in Tacoma, WA, to perform general maintenance, basic repairs, and preventative tasks across campus under supervision of the Chief of Maintenance.

You will support boiler checks, air systems, and preventive maintenance while ensuring safety and operational efficiency on a busy university campus. The role includes an after-hours on-call schedule and occasional overtime.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Minimum 1 year of work experience in building maintenance, general construction, or similar mechanical craft.
• Valid Washington State driver’s license held for at least 2 years.
• Mechanically inclined with hands-on, multi-trade troubleshooting.
• Ability to obtain a Class IV Boiler Fireman certification within 18 months; PLU funds pathway options.
• Pre-employment background checks including driving abstract; pass Driver’s Certification Training.

Responsibilities

• Address daily general maintenance requests (ceiling tiles, bulbs, minor plumbing/carpentry).
• Assist Building Engineers with boiler checks, water testing, and annual inspections prep.
• Assist Preventative Maintenance Tech with filter changes and motor lubrication.
• Troubleshoot elevators and coordinate with contractors for emergencies.
• Monitor fire sprinkler and fire alarm systems; reset alarms as needed.
• Maintain pool chemical balance.
• Secure buildings and replace door hardware as needed.
• Respond to heating/cooling issues and routine problems.
