Job summary

Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic 2 to perform maintenance and repair across carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical trades. Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Four years of journey-level experience in a skilled mechanical trade in a commercial, institutional, or industrial setting.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow written instructions and technical information.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing, verbally, and through diagrams or other visual means.
  • Demonstrated ability to safely use and maintain hand and power tools related to the trade.
  • Experience working in occupied and sensitive environments, including offices, classrooms, residence halls, and restrooms.
  • Valid driver’s license, or the ability to obtain one before employment, to operate state-owned vehicles.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without accommodation.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Strong technical aptitude and accurate recordkeeping skills.
  • Proficiency with computer hardware and software used for work order tracking and timekeeping.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work cooperatively with students, faculty, staff, and the public.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, work under pressure, and meet project deadlines.
  • Willingness to obtain asbestos abatement certification (preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance and repair duties in carpentry, painting, plumbing, mechanical and electrical trades.
  • Repair and maintain machinery and equipment per diagrams, manuals, and instructions.
  • Observe and adjust mechanical devices to ensure proper operation.
  • Dismantle machines for servicing and replace parts as needed.
  • Lubricate and clean pumps, motors, and related equipment.
  • Replace defective fixtures and components in buildings.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and respond to after-hours callouts as needed.
  • Troubleshoot building envelope, mechanical, plumbing and HVAC systems.
