Job summary

Queens Community House is seeking a Maintenance Worker / Handyperson to join our Facilities team at the Forest Hills Annex in Queens. You will perform routine maintenance, repairs, and groundskeeping to keep sites safe, clean, and operational for staff, participants, and visitors.

The role requires hands-on skills in plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and basic HVAC, with a focus on proactive upkeep and safety.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Previous experience in building maintenance, custodial services, facilities, or a related field.
  • General knowledge of plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and basic HVAC systems.
  • Ability to safely operate maintenance tools and equipment.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical work, including bending, climbing ladders, and standing for extended periods.
  • Valid driver’s license preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine cleaning activities, including dusting, sweeping, mopping, and general upkeep.
  • Complete minor repairs, such as repairing broken locks, patching walls, and fixing small maintenance issues.
  • Inspect control panels and electrical wiring to identify potential problems.
  • Install appliances, furniture, and equipment as needed.
  • Maintain outdoor areas by mowing lawns, collecting litter, and performing seasonal groundskeeping.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance, including replacing light bulbs and performing routine inspections.
  • Inspect and troubleshoot building systems, including ventilation and mechanical equipment.
  • Ensure safety systems, including fire alarms and emergency equipment, are functioning properly.
  • Collaborate with contractors and other professionals during facility renovations and repair projects.
  • Report maintenance concerns, repair needs, and safety issues to the Facilities or Maintenance Manager.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment while following all safety regulations.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
