Job summary

ABM Industries seeks an Assistant Mechanic to support the Maintenance and Facilities team with inspection, maintenance, repair, and upkeep of building systems and equipment.

You will assist with work orders, safety procedures, and coordination with staff and vendors while learning under a Mechanic, Maintenance Supervisor, or Facilities Manager.

This role emphasizes reliability, attention to detail, and safe operation of basic hand and power tools in a school environment.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Prev. maintenance, mechanical, construction, facilities, or related experience preferred.
• Basic knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and building maintenance practices preferred.
• Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
• Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a maintenance team.
• Strong attendance, reliability, and communication skills.
• Valid driver’s license may be required.

Responsibilities

• Assist the Mechanic with routine maintenance, repairs, and preventative maintenance of facility equipment and systems.
• Assist with troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and other facility-related issues within training and authorization.
• Perform basic repairs and adjustments to building fixtures, equipment, doors, and other components.
• Assist with preventative maintenance inspections and document identified issues.
• Respond to assigned work orders and complete tasks in a timely and professional manner.
• Assist with moving, installing, assembling, and maintaining equipment and furnishings.
• Use hand tools, power tools, ladders, and maintenance equipment safely and appropriately.
• Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean and organized condition.
• Assist with maintaining an accurate inventory of maintenance supplies, parts, and materials.
• Report damaged, unsafe, or malfunctioning equipment and building conditions to the Mechanic or supervisor.
• Follow safety procedures, manufacturer recommendations, and company/district policies.
• Assist with emergency maintenance needs when directed.
• Maintain professional communication with school administrators, staff, contractors, custodial staff, and other district personnel.
• Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in school buildings.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Mechanic, Maintenance Supervisor, or Facilities Manager.
