Job summary

The George Washington University in Foggy Bottom, Washington, D.C. seeks a Facilities Maintenance Technician (FMT) to support the University’s mission in education and safety.

The role covers semi‑skilled work across carpentry, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and machinist tasks under supervision in a campus setting. Responsibilities include operating tools, performing repairs, reading blueprints and technical documents, and maintaining building systems.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED plus 1.5 years of relevant professional experience, or a Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study.
  • Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Operate hand tools, power tools, and other shop equipment as needed.
  • Perform minor repairs on building fixtures, plumbing, heating, laundry, kitchen equipment, motors, and electrical appliances.
  • Operate automotive equipment to transport materials and supplies.
  • Assist in the fabrication of equipment and materials constructed in trade shops in accordance with project requirements.
  • Repair windows, doors, screens, floors, floor coverings, and painted surfaces.
  • Perform minor repairs on electrical circuits, steam or waterlines, plumbing fixtures, lights, and partitions; clean clogged drains and sewer lines; replace broken windows.
  • Respond to maintenance requests in a timely and professional manner.
  • Detect and report the need for major maintenance repairs.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, schematics, and technical documents associated with general machinery to locate trouble areas and complete repairs accurately.
  • Operate and maintain building equipment and systems such as vacuum systems, control air systems, building air systems, emergency generators, electrical distribution systems, liquid pumping systems, steam, air handling systems, hot/cold water systems, and natural gas and fuel oil systems.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on equipment, buildings, and building systems to ensure safe operation.
  • Provide guidance to staff to ensure work orders are completed accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Maintain required record‑keeping.

Facilities Maintenance Technician (FMT)

Job Description Summary: Facilities, Buildings & Grounds (FBG) is currently seeking a Facilities Maintenance Technician (FMT) to help support the University’s mission in education. FBG is a part of GW’s Division of Safety and Operations, which maintains GW’s property and grounds on all three campuses.

Reporting to the Facility Zone Manager, the Facilities Maintenance Technician typically performs semi‑skilled and sub‑journey work in the maintenance, repair, remodeling, alterations, and construction of buildings, grounds, facilities, and equipment. Position will be utilized as a general repairer when no immediate journey‑level tradesperson is unavailable.

These positions work independently in routine maintenance assignments or under the technical direction of a journey‑level position. They independently perform semi‑skilled work in carpentry, plumbing, welding and metal fabrication, steam fitting, electrical, mechanical, and machinist work. Under the technical direction of a journey‑level trades worker, the FMT may perform skilled work in carpentry, plumbing, steam fitting, electrical, mechanical, and machinist work.

Key Responsibilities

Minimum Qualifications

Qualified candidates will hold a high school diploma/GED plus 1.5 years of relevant professional experience, or a Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications
  • A valid driver’s license and CPR/first aid certification.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Basic electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and general building systems repair.
  • Experience with an assortment of hand tools and equipment, mechanical aptitude, and the ability to read blueprints or equipment diagrams.
