Job summary

The City of Roanoke is seeking skilled trades crewmembers to support the Facilities Division of Public Works. The Facilities Journeyman roles cover electrical, plumbing, carpentry, locksmith, welding and HVAC tasks across multiple trades with 18-month paths to Virginia state journeyman certification.

Positions are non-exempt, full-time, and require safety compliance, ability to operate heavy equipment, and occasional evening or weekend work. Training provided as needed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required with related trades exposure.
• Ability to read and interpret safety rules and maintenance instructions.
• Willingness to obtain Virginia journeyman certification within 18 months.
• Must pass background checks and meet licensing requirements as issued.

Responsibilities

• Perform skilled trades work in carpentry, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and/or welding.
• Inspect work in progress and ensure conformance to instructions.
• Maintain log sheets, checklists and safety compliance.
• Assist with special events, snow removal and emergency tasks as needed.
• Operate relevant equipment and follow safety procedures.
