Job summary

City of Roanoke is seeking skilled trades personnel to perform journey-level work in carpentry, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and/or welding. Candidates should have a high school diploma or GED and 3–5 years of related experience, with a valid Virginia driver’s permit.

Responsibilities include instructing subordinates, inspecting work, and participating in snow removal and emergency tasks. Candidates must meet safety and regulatory requirements and may need CJIS clearance.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED and 3–5 years of experience and/or training in the trades area assigned or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Requires a valid Virginia driver’s permit.
• HVAC or Plumber licenses and Backflow certification may be required or pursued (as described).
• May be required to pass CJIS background check due to working in secured areas.

Responsibilities

• Follow safety rules and procedures and ensure compliance with laws and departmental procedures.
• Lead or assist a crew; communicate job requirements from supervisor or foreman.
• Inspect work in progress to ensure conformance with instructions; maintain logs and checklists.
• Operate heavy and light equipment for snow removal, events, and emergencies; assist with materials and parts.
