Job summary

Peckham, Inc. in Lansing, MI is seeking a Facilities Grounds Level I to assist the Grounds Coordinator and Technician in maintaining Peckham properties across the Mid-Michigan area.

Primary duties include planting ornamentals, mulching, weed control, and turf care during the growing season, with broader maintenance tasks in off-season. This full-time role requires ladders, lifting up to 50 pounds, and operation of lawn equipment.

Qualifications

  • Ability to climb ladders and work from heights.
  • Distinguish red/green.
  • Read a tape measure.
  • Experience in landscape or turf maintenance is preferred.
  • Experience operating motorized equipment is preferred.
  • Team-oriented and able to communicate respectfully.
  • Ability to stay on task independently.
  • Basic knowledge of landscape and building maintenance.
  • Read simple documents in English.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Follow written and oral instructions in English.
  • Basic math skills such as counting, addition, and subtraction.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with grounds maintenance: planting ornamentals, mulching, hand weeding.
  • Use a leaf blower to remove leaves and debris.
  • Shovel and rake soil and mulch.
  • Cultivate soil and plant ornamentals; control weeds by hand.
  • Assist with snow removal and salting on walkways.
  • Support Peckham Farm and special projects.
  • Assist in cleaning of walls, ceilings, and floors and setup/removal of decorations.
  • Maintain safety and report concerns to supervisor.

Why Work at Peckham - Peckham SUMMARY

The Facilities Grounds Level I position assists the Grounds Coordinator and the Grounds Technician in activities that preserve and improve the landscapes and other outdoor spaces at Peckham facilities throughout the Mid-Michigan area. Primary duties of this position during the growing season include planting, transplanting, hand weeding, spreading mulch and caring for the turf and ornamentals on Peckham properties. During the off season, responsibilities may include general building maintenance, hoop house and other maintenance at Peckham farm; basic building, equipment, and machinery maintenance. Responsibilities may also include general cleaning, leaf removal, setup/removal of holiday decorations, and snow removal activities. This position may work with Farm or Facilities staff on special projects as needed. This position utilizes a team approach for most projects and promotes Peckham's vision, values, and services to all customers and stakeholders. The position assists in maintaining organization wide quality standards. Access to reliable transportation is required.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist with grounds maintenance activities such as, planting ornamentals, installing mulch, hand weeding, raking, trash pick-up.
  • Using a leaf blower to remove leaves, grass clippings etc.
  • Shovel and rake soil and mulch.
  • Cultivate soil, plant ornamentals and control weeds by hand pulling and hoeing.
  • Assist with snow removal and clearing of emergency exits and walking areas; spreading salt & deicer on walkways, constructing snow fences.
  • Assist with agricultural or horticultural activities at Peckham Farm.
  • Assist with special projects such as live wall plant installation.
  • Assist in specialty cleaning of wall, ceiling, and floor surfaces.
  • Assist with setup and removal of holiday decorations around Lansing area facilities (i.e. hanging lights, setting up displays by following diagrams and verbal instructions).
  • Assist with general facility maintenance including repair, cleaning and upkeep of fixtures, appliances, storage racking, and furniture using hand tools.
  • Maintain a safe and healthy work area and report any safety concerns to the supervisor.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ability to climb ladders and work from heights, and the ability to kneel and crouch for extended periods.
  • This job requires the ability to distinguish between red and green.
  • This job requires candidates to bathe or shower and change clothes regularly.
  • Candidate to possess or obtain within 90 days a valid MI driver's license.
  • Ability to read a tape measure.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience in landscape or turf maintenance.
  • Experience operating motorized equipment.
  • Experience working in a team setting and maintaining respectful communication.
  • Ability to stay on task independently.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
  • Basic knowledge of landscape and building maintenance.
  • Ability to read simple documents, instructions, and manuals in English.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Ability to follow and carry out written and oral instructions in English.
  • Basic math skills: counting, addition, and subtraction.

This job will require the use of wheelbarrows, shop vacs, rolling scaffolding, folding ladders, extension ladders, power washers, assorted hand tools, shovel, hoe, rake etc., string trimmers, lawn edgers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, push mowers, riding mowers, ATV, UTV, Golf Cart, Scissor lift, hand tools, pumps, sprinklers, snow blowers, and salt and fertilizer spreaders, spot spray cans.
