Job summary

Southwestern Michigan College is seeking a Director of Buildings and Grounds to lead all facilities operations across the Dowagiac and Niles campuses. The role supervises maintenance staff, custodians, and contractors to ensure safe, efficient campus operations.

Ideal candidates bring a high school diploma or GED with 5–10 years in facilities, plus supervisory experience; associate or bachelor’s degrees are preferred.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Supervisory experience of institutional building and grounds operations.
• Five to ten years of experience in facilities operations involving electrical, HVAC, plumbing, or other skilled areas.

Responsibilities

• Oversee operation of college buildings and grounds including HVAC, utilities, parking lots and sidewalks.
• Maintain facility records including blueprints, boiler certifications, inspections, and equipment service agreements.
• Supervise construction/renovation projects with architects, contractors and college administration.
• Serve as facilities contact in emergencies including crises, severe weather and infrastructure failures.
• Manage energy conservation efforts campuswide and participate in upgrades and programs.
• Prepare capital outlay, department budget, and master plan for facilities.
