City of Syracuse is hiring a Facilities Engineer responsible for applying engineering principles to design, renovate and maintain public facilities. The role requires independent judgment, supervisory capacity, and coordination with multiple departments.

The position emphasizes safety, environmental health, energy management and cost-effective operations across a range of government facilities. Residency within City limits is required and reflects the public-service nature of the role.

Qualifications

• Baccalaureate degree in Civil, Mechanical, Structural, Architecture, Construction Management, or related field.
• Two years of work experience in building engineering, HVAC, structure, or electrical engineering; or seven years total with two in related area.
• Ability to supervise staff and coordinate with multiple departments.

Responsibilities

• Plans, arranges and conducts periodic inspections of facilities to ensure codes and standards are met.
• Designs staff development activities to upgrade preventive maintenance skills in HVAC and related topics.
• Prepares preliminary plans, specifications and cost estimates for repairs, alterations, or new constructions.
• Reviews progress of construction work and ensures compliance with plans and specs.
• Coordinates inspections for asbestos, hazardous materials, radon, and removal or containment as needed.
• Meets with administrative personnel and boards to explain projects and seek funding.
• Monitors energy management and pursues cost-saving opportunities.
