Job summary

City of Syracuse seeks a Civil Engineer I to perform engineering duties under supervision in the investigation, design, and construction of public works. You will supervise survey teams, prepare estimates, inspect work for compliance, and act as resident engineer on bridges and roads.

The role requires a Civil Engineering degree or equivalent experience and offers exposure to budgeting, bidding, and coordination with multiple stakeholders within county projects.

Qualifications

• Promotional: two years of permanent competitive status in Civil Engineer I.
• Open Competitive: degree plus two years of professional civil engineering experience, or equivalent.
• Six years paraprofessional or professional civil engineering experience, with at least two in a professional level capacity.
• Equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the above limits.

Responsibilities

• Supervises field survey parties, takes notes, makes sketches and oversees survey progress.
• Makes preliminary engineering estimates and recommendations for superiors.
• Inspects work within county rights of way for permit compliance on pavements, water, sewer and gas mains.
• Acts as resident engineer on bridge and road construction projects; supervises inspections and monthly payments.
• Plans and designs highways under professional supervision and reviews preliminary layouts.
• Manages public improvement projects, schedules and budgets; coordinates with contractors and consultants.
