Job summary

City of Syracuse is seeking an Engineering Technician to work under a Civil Engineer, performing field surveys, stakeouts, and related office drafting. Responsibilities include assisting in plans, specifications, and contract administration, and supervising field personnel.

Residency in the City of Syracuse is required; candidate must establish residency within six months if not already a resident. The role involves field and office duties, material testing, and data analysis in public works

Qualifications

• Promotional: One year of permanent competitive status in Engineering Technician I.
• Open Competitive: A) Graduation from regionally accredited college with an associate degree in engineering science/engineering technology and one year of paraprofessional or professional civil engineering experience; or B) Three years of paraprofessional or professional civil engineering experience.

Responsibilities

• Supervises and participates in topographic or hydrographic and land surveys.
• Assists in engineering studies, construction inspections, and maintenance of contracts.
• Evaluates, tests and performs quality control on construction materials/equipment.
• Plots field survey data; checks engineering and cost calculations.
• Assists in preparing plans and specifications; design of engineering projects; prepares contracts and administers them.
• Reviews specifications and engineering drawings.
• Maintains office records and prepares contractors' payment requisitions.

Job description

City of Syracuse residency is required for this position. If you are not a resident, you have six (6) months from your date of hire to establish residency.

Job Description

The work involves responsibility for performing technical duties, subordinate to those that require a Civil Engineer, in field and office civil engineering work in a local municipality. Under general supervision of an Engineer, an employee in this class serves as an engineering field party chief in conducting surveys. An employee in this class is responsible for preparing the site of construction projects with stakeouts and grade letters. Technical duties are performed in the areas of engineering studies, field surveys, evaluation, testing and quality control of construction materials and equipment and office technical work. Assignments are received orally or in writing with leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment. Supervision is exercised over a small number of field survey personnel. Does related work as required.

Typical Work Activities

• Supervises and participates in topographic or hydrographic and land surveys
• Assists in conducting engineering studies and investigations, construction inspection, demolition inspections and maintenance of contracts
• Evaluates, tests and performs quality control work on construction materials manufactured equipment used in construction
• Performs work involving office reduction and plotting of field survey data; checks engineering and cost calculations
• Assists in the preparation of plans and specifications; design of engineering projects; preparation of contracts and their administration
• Assists in the review of specifications and engineering drawings
• Assists in the maintenance of office records and the preparation of contractors' payment requisitions

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Good knowledge of the principles, techniques and practices of topographic or hydrographic surveying or land surveying.
• Good knowledge of the principles, practices and instruments used in engineering drafting.
• Good knowledge of mathematics through trigonometry and its application to public works construction.
• Good knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices. Working knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision.
• Skill in the use of engineering instruments and equipment.
• Ability to effectively supervise the work of others.
• Ability to perform difficult technical computations, to make estimates and tests and to compile engineering data and statistics.
• Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Minimum Qualifications

• Promotional: One (1) year of permanent competitive class status in the title of Engineering Technician I.
• Open Competitive:
  • A) Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the or New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an associate degree in engineering science or in an engineering technology field and one (1) year of paraprofessional or professional level work experience in civil engineering; or
  • B) Three (3) years of paraprofessional or professional level work experience, or its part time equivalent, in civil engineering
