Job summary

GM Performance Power Units in Concord, NC seeks a highly skilled Damage Modeler to support life predictions for its Formula 1 Power Unit. You will work in Reliability, interfacing with design, materials, and test teams to ensure robust life estimates under multi-mechanism loading.

The role emphasizes physics-based damage modeling, data-driven updates from on-track telemetry, and close collaboration across engineering disciplines to enable race-ready reliability outcomes.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's in Mechanical/Automotive/Aerospace with focus on structural mechanics or fracture mechanics.
  • 5+ years in structural integrity, lifing, fatigue or damage-tolerance role (motorsport preferred).
  • Hands-on experience developing or applying damage models for real hardware under multi-mechanism loading.
  • Experience correlating analytical life predictions with test/field evidence and refining models.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, validate and maintain physics-based damage accumulation models for PU components (LCF, HCF, creep, TMF).
  • Define material fatigue/creep databases from published data and test-derived values.
  • Translate stress/strain outputs and thermal analyses into life consumption estimates with uncertainty bounds.
  • Develop load spectra from ATLAS telemetry and automate data pipelines with Reliability Data Engineer.
  • Collaborate with design, materials, reliability teams; support FMEA with quantitative life estimates.
  • Communicate results clearly to stakeholders and maintain a living lifing document.
