Job summary

GM Performance Power Units in Concord, NC seeks a Formula 1 Mechanical Design Engineer to develop high-quality engine components and assemblies. You will design within powertrain systems, create 3D CAD models and drawings, and apply GD&T while aligning with design standards and manufacturing practices.

The role requires 5+ years in automotive design, NX and Teamcenter proficiency, and strong problem-solving and communication skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in mechanical, design, or automotive engineering.
• Minimum 5+ years of experience with successful automotive product design results.
• 3-5 years of experience as an automotive design engineer, preferably in powertrain.
• Proficiency with Siemens Teamcenter and NX.
• Strong technical aptitude: knowledge of internal combustion engine fundamentals is an advantage.
• Excellent written communication and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to a culture of trust, accountability, and continuous improvement.
• Create 3D CAD models, assemblies to define and document design intent while complying with Design Standards and Best Practices
• Create accurate component drawings and apply proper GD&T
• Apply design for manufacturing, design for assembly, and system integration knowledge into parts and subsystem designs
• Perform basic linear static structural analysis to optimize components for stiffness and mass
• Apply analytical results from Senior Analysts to component design with support of the Chief Engineer, Design Leader and other Designers
• Develop and maintain bills of materials and standard work instructions
• Ensure high quality, timely release of design responsibilities
• Actively identify new areas for learning and take advantage of learning opportunities
• Operate independently and proactively within a dynamic, high-variability environment
• Collaborate with internal and external manufacturing partners to ensure accurate and timely production
• Be an active participant in project design reviews and group meetings
• Share lessons learned with Design Leader/ Design Team plus recommend updates to Best Practices
• Proactively communicate with Chief Engineer, Design Manager, and Design Leader regarding project status, timing, and technical issues
