Job summary

The Cincinnati Insurance Companies seeks experienced underwriters in Minnesota to join a service‑oriented team. You will solicit, underwrite, and price surplus lines commercial property and casualty business, determining risk acceptability and terms with a high degree of judgment.

This role requires 5+ years in commercial lines underwriting, a bachelor’s degree, and strong negotiation and communication skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or extensive relevant excess and surplus lines underwriting experience.
• Minimum 5 years of experience working with commercial lines property and casualty products.
• ASLI or CPCU designations are preferred.
• Ability to develop positive working relationships with team members and agents.

Responsibilities

• Solicit, underwrite, and price new and renewal surplus lines commercial property and casualty business.
• Determine risk acceptability, pricing, coverage, terms, and conditions.
• Develop, analyze, and evaluate information for complex risks.
• Aim to achieve production and loss ratio goals within the regional territory.
• Travel within the assigned territory, including occasional overnight stays.
• Mentor and train underwriters and underwriting assistants.
• Build relationships with producers and reinsurers.
• Research new products and coverage forms.

Location

Minnesota – candidates must reside within the territory or in proximity to our Fairfield, OH headquarters.

Salary and Compensation

The pay range for this position is $75,000 – $140,000 annually, based on education, experience, location, and skills. Eligible associates may also receive an annual cash bonus and stock incentives.

Responsibilities

• work in partnership with producers and an assigned underwriting assistant to solicit, underwrite, and price new and renewal surplus lines commercial property and casualty business
• determine individual risk acceptability, pricing, coverage, terms, and conditions
• develop, analyze, and evaluate information and exposures for complex risks
• achieve production and loss ratio goals within the assigned regional territory
• work independently with a high level of authority and judgment
• determine need for and secure appropriate reinsurance on individual accounts
• mentor and train underwriters and underwriting assistants
• develop successful business relationships with producers and reinsurers
• research new products and coverage forms
• travel within the assigned territory, including occasional overnight stays

Requirements

• property and casualty underwriting experience
• proficient use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
• strong interpersonal, organizational, and time‑management skills
• strong decision‑making, analytical, and negotiating abilities
• desire to build relationships and listen effectively
• ability to develop positive working relationships with team members and agents
• skilled use of verbal communication to explain, negotiate, and present information, and understanding of when to use verbal or written communication
• a valid driver’s license (a Motor Vehicle Record background check will be required, and the position may include a company vehicle)

Education and Experience

• bachelor’s degree or extensive relevant excess and surplus lines underwriting experience
• minimum 5 years of experience working with commercial lines property and casualty products
• prior excess and surplus casualty underwriting experience with a carrier, broker, or MGA is preferred
• ASLI or CPCU designations are preferred
• candidates with a carrier background will be given preference; complete training is provided in Cincinnati, OH, prior to deployment to regional territory
