Job summary

The Jefferson County Board of Education seeks an Exceptional Education Teacher to implement specialized programs for students with disabilities, develop IEPs, and coordinate with a multi-disciplinary team. The role emphasizes adaptive instruction, data-driven planning, and the use of assistive technology to support learning.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
• Valid Alabama teaching certificate in special education.
• Ability to meet suitability criteria for employment and/or certification under the Alabama Child Protection Act.
• Proficiency in oral and written communication skills.
• Effective interpersonal skills with collaboration across diverse groups.
• Ability to develop and implement curriculum for students with disabilities.
• Ability to use technology to communicate, plan, instruct, and report.
• Physical strength to perform job responsibilities, including lifting up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to stand, walk, and assist with toileting/hygiene needs.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrates support for the school system’s vision and priorities.
• Demonstrates knowledge of child development and disabilities.
• Participates in developing students’ IEPs as a team member and implements IEPs.
• Schedules IEP meetings.
• Uses varied instructional strategies to meet student needs.
• Collaborates with regular education staff and provides support/modifications.
• Uses technology to plan, deliver instruction, and monitor progress.
• Models and encourages innovative use of instructional technology.
• Maintains a clean, organized classroom and manages instructional time effectively.
• Interprets data to inform instructional planning and program evaluation.
