University of Michigan Health-West seeks a Sterile Processing Technician for the Evening shift (M-F, 3p–11:30p). The role involves decontamination, sterilization, assembly, and distribution of instruments, with weekend/on-call rotation and potential overtime.

You will ensure BI/Bowie-Dick testing, proper packaging, and adherence to sterile techniques under supervision. Responsibilities include prioritizing workload, operating sterilizers and washers, and maintaining accurate records.

Qualifications

• High school diploma (GED) or equivalent.
• Certification in Sterile Service Technician from an accredited agency is expected.
• If not certified, must become certified within two (2) years of hire and recertify if invalid.
• Working knowledge of sterile or aseptic technique.
• Working knowledge of decontamination and sterilization principles.
• Ability to use computer applications including Microsoft Office and web-based programs.
• Ability to perform basic computer data entry.
• Ability to read and understand manufacturer instructions for cleaning and sterilization of proprietary instruments.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
• Physical activity involves lifting 20–50 lb instrument trays or sets, walking, pushing and pulling carts and equipment; occasional heavier trays.
• Must work with urgency while maintaining accuracy and follow set standards.

Responsabilités

• Rotate through all SPD work-stations and perform all SPD functions under supervision or independently as oriented.
• Prioritize workload based on department needs.
• Clean and sort soiled instrumentation and equipment per standards and manufacturer instructions.
• Operate washer/decontaminator, cart washer, ultrasonic cleaner, scope reprocessor, sterilizers, and computer.
• Perform sterilization with proper indicators and maintain daily BI/Bowie-Dick testing records.
• Assemble, package, inspect instruments for good condition and maintain tray accuracy below 2% error.
• Assist SPD Lead Technician/Supervisor and other managers as needed.
• Communicate missing instruments to SPD/OR staff and hand off to the next shift.
• Inventory stock and implants; notify leadership of low levels.
• Adhere to hospital policies, values, and best practices; mentor new staff.
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of SPD; pursue ongoing education.
