Job summary

UMass Memorial Health is hiring a Patient Care Technician I to support licensed clinicians in the Med Surg Unit in Massachusetts. Under supervision, you perform a variety of patient care activities and receive workplace education to assist the healthcare team.

The role involves helping with daily living activities, taking and recording vital signs, and assisting with treatments. Evening schedule 3:00pm-11:30pm, 32 hours weekly; signing bonus may be available.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Minimum 800 hours of PCT experience or 6 months direct patient care.
• English language proficiency for reading/writing.
• Knowledge of medical terminology.
• Computer skills relevant to healthcare settings.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to remain calm under pressure.

Responsibilities

• Communicate clearly with the RN about patient changes and vital signs.
• Maintain constant observation for high‑risk patients as assigned.
• Assist with daily living activities and safe patient handling.
• Support treatments and prepare equipment under supervision.
• Record vital signs, intake, and contribute to patient safety protocols.
• Assist with specimen collection and basic unit equipment tasks.
• Demonstrate respectful, culturally appropriate communication with patients and staff.
• Possess ability to precept new PCTs when required.
