Job summary

Sisters of Mercy of the Americas in Chicago, IL, seeks an On-Call Companion to support Sisters during urgent healthcare needs. The role requires readiness to respond on call during evenings and overnight hours, with proximity to Mercy Circle.

You will help with transportation, communication with healthcare providers, and documentation of medical information, ensuring safety and respectful care. This is a part-time, on-call position with eligible benefits.

Qualifications

• High school diploma is required.
• Current Illinois driver’s license without significant moving violations.
• Some college coursework is preferred.
• Caregiving experience is a plus.
• Familiarity with Sisters of Mercy in Chicago is beneficial.
• Experience communicating with healthcare providers is preferred.
• Ability to clearly document and understand a Sister’s healthcare status and treatment.
• Ability to push and maneuver a wheelchair over long distances.
• Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry objects weighing less than 50 pounds.
• Ability to communicate clearly in English, read materials, and maintain accurate documentation.
• Mobility and strength to move around the building and help ensure safety.
• Ability to use a computer and standard office equipment.

Responsibilities

• Serve on call as scheduled, generally for a minimum of seven consecutive days, and remain available from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. to respond to urgent or emergent healthcare needs.
• Remain within a 30-minute drive of Mercy Circle while on call.
• Respond to calls and meet or accompany Sisters at local hospitals, emergency rooms, or urgent care centers.
• Help Sisters communicate with healthcare providers and document information shared by medical staff.
• Communicate and coordinate consistently with the Life Care Coordinator according to established procedures.
• Provide transportation when needed and assist Sisters in and out of the vehicle, ensuring they are safely positioned and wearing seat belts.
• Keep the vehicle clean, fueled, and in good working condition.
• Maintain daily service and mileage logs.
• Immediately notify the Life Care Coordinator of any concerns regarding a Sister’s condition or needs.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
