Job summary

Full-time union position based at the Central Library with a 3PM-11PM schedule Weeks. Salary bands include the hiring range and incumbent scale, reflecting a strong public sector pay rate in New York.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent required.
• Refrigeration Certification preferred.
• Valid New York State Driver's license with a good driving record; ability to drive a truck/van.
• Technical school or related training preferred.
• A minimum of 5 years demonstrated experience in the maintenance of buildings.
• Must meet physical and medical requirements; ability to lift moderate to heavy objects and work with heavy tools.
• Knowledge of building trades, tools and manuals; ability to read plans and specs of a technical nature.
• Demonstrated ability in general mechanical and related skills including plumbing and electrical repairs.
• Ability to work independently with little supervision.
• Ability to communicate verbally and in writing; may complete reports and requisitions.
• Basic computer knowledge—email, etc.
• Exhibit initiative and pro-active behavior to provide good customer service.
• Ability to work effectively within a large urban public library system.
• Must be able to obtain all necessary licenses and certificates of fitness for the department.
• Be available to work all shifts including evenings, Saturdays, Sundays, or holidays if required.

Responsibilities

• Perform maintenance work such as electrical repair, painting, carpentry, window screens, shelves, stands, and floor tile installation.
• Perform plumbing work such as pipe fitting, unstopping drains, replacing faucets and washers, and installing fixtures.
• Repair/restoration of restrooms, doors, locks, floors, walls and related components.
• Order supplies and materials for repairs as needed.
• Operate and repair ventilating/air conditioning equipment.
• Work with gas systems and boilers.
• Perform other maintenance tasks as required.
