Job summary

Job Overview

Under general supervision, performs work in maintaining buildings and equipment at Library facilities throughout the BPL system. The role includes independent or teamwork in maintenance repairs, new construction, and upgrading of finishes.

Responsibilities

• Perform maintenance repairs, including carpentry, electrical, mechanical (HVAC), plumbing, locksmithing, roofing, painting, flooring, and other construction tasks.
• Maintain air conditioner equipment and controls; boiler operation; framing, taping, outlets, lights, ballasts, motors, and controls; plumbing repairs and installation; restroom equipment; roofing, masonry, door hardware; painting and flooring.
• Perform preventative maintenance on boiler and burners, pumps, motors, air compressors, elevators, air handlers.
• Diagnose and repair heating, ventilating, and air conditioning equipment and controls; waste disposal systems.
• Keep records and prepare reports on materials used; order parts.
• Enforce safety requirements to protect building and grounds from vandalism.
• Drive vehicles and transport tools and equipment as necessary.
• Perform other maintenance duties as required.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent required.
• Refrigeration Certification preferred.
• Valid New York State Driver’s license with good driving record; ability to drive a truck and/or van.
• Minimum of 5 years demonstrated experience in maintenance of buildings.
• Knowledge of building trades, tools, manuals and ability to read and interpret technical plans and specifications.
• Demonstrated ability in general mechanical and related skills including plumbing and electrical repairs.
• Ability to work independently with little supervision.
• Ability to communicate verbally and in writing; may be required to complete reports, requisitions, job status updates, and other related paperwork.
• Basic computer knowledge (email, etc.).
• Ability to lift moderate to heavy objects and work with heavy tools.
• Must obtain all necessary licenses and certificates of fitness required to operate the department.
• Must be available to work all shifts including evenings, Saturday, Sunday or holiday if required.
