Job summary

Brown University Health seeks a detail-oriented laboratory support technician to assist with pre-analytical specimen processing, patient registration, test ordering and specimen distribution under supervision. You will also help manage laboratory computer systems and maintain accurate logs.

Key responsibilities include handling specimens, producing bar code labels, communicating with patient care units and physician offices, and ensuring confidentiality and safety in line with hospital policies.

Qualifications

• Level of knowledge normally acquired through completion of high school with course work in Biology and Chemistry.
• Applies standard precautions.
• Organizational and clerical skills to maintain logs and records. Computer skills.
• Interpersonal and communication skills to exchange information with physicians, nurses, and external laboratories.

Responsibilities

• Receives specimens for pre-analytical processing and distributes within laboratories.
• Maintains logbooks and documents as required.
• Checks specimens for special handling needs and communicates priorities.
• Contacts units and offices to clarify testing requests and notify redraws.
• Answers central laboratory line and responds to inquiries about results and procedures.
• Tracks lab problems and concerns and supports resolution.
• Prepares transfer packing lists between affiliate hospitals.
• Receives test results and communicates STAT results to care units.
• Maintains detailed records and enters ICD-9 coding in LIS/HIS systems.
• Upholds confidentiality and adheres to policy; performs duties timely.
