Job summary

Preston Companies is seeking a detail-oriented Estimator to join the Sparks, Nevada team. You will review project plans, prepare accurate cost estimates, and coordinate with subcontractors, suppliers, and internal teams to ensure competitive bids.

The ideal candidate has 3–5 years of heavy civil estimating experience, is proficient with HCSS HeavyBid and Excel, and can manage multiple bid deadlines while maintaining accuracy and safety standards.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3–5 years of experience in heavy civil construction estimating, with emphasis on underground wet utility projects including sewer, water, and storm drain systems.
• Proficient in construction estimating software including HCSS HeavyBid and Microsoft Excel.
• Strong understanding of heavy civil construction means and methods, production tracking, labor and equipment costing, and subcontractor/vendor solicitation.
• Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, geotechnical reports, utility maps, and contract documents.
• Experience preparing quantity takeoffs, bid summaries, subcontractor comparisons, and estimate reviews.

Responsibilities

• Analyze project plans, specifications, standard requirements, and soil reports.
• Submit pre-bid RFIs to owners or engineers as needed.
• Perform material take-offs and verify all estimated SOV quantities.
• Obtain a minimum of three competitive quotes from subcontractors, material suppliers, and trucking companies.
• Attend pre-bid meetings or arrange for a representative to attend in your absence.
• Prepare detailed bid proposals using HCSS HeavyBid.
• Record verbal quotes and request formal written quotes for documentation.
• Verify bid submittal documents are complete and accurate, coordinating with the estimating assistant.
