We are seeking an ESG Data Engineer to build and scale the data infrastructure that supports our environmental, social, and governance reporting, analytics, target tracking, and decision-making.
This role sits at the intersection of sustainability and data engineering. You will design robust data pipelines and models that bring together ESG information from across a complex pharmaceutical enterprise. This includes manufacturing, laboratories, facilities, supply chain, procurement, HR, finance, and external suppliers.
You will partner closely with Sustainability/ESG, Enterprise Data, IT, Finance, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, and reporting teams to improve the quality, traceability, automation, and accessibility of ESG data. Your work will help create a trusted ESG data foundation capable of supporting external disclosures, regulatory reporting, sustainability targets, customer requests, and internal analytics.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, build, test, and maintain scalable pipelines for collecting, transforming, and integrating ESG data from multiple internal and external systems.
- Develop standardized ESG data models covering areas such as energy, greenhouse-gas emissions, water, waste, business travel, logistics, purchased goods and services, workforce metrics, and supplier sustainability data.
- Automate data ingestion and transformation processes that are currently manual or spreadsheet-dependent.
- Build reusable datasets and data products for ESG reporting, dashboards, analytics, and decision-making.
- Optimize data workflows for performance, scalability, reliability, and maintainability.
Data Quality & Controls
- Develop automated validation, reconciliation, exception-handling, and data-quality controls.
- Implement data lineage and traceability from reported ESG metrics back to source systems.
- Partner with ESG reporting and controls teams to strengthen auditability and evidence management.
- Develop processes to identify missing, anomalous, or inconsistent ESG data and coordinate remediation with data owners.
- Support the establishment of ESG data dictionaries, metadata standards, calculation methodologies, and governance processes.
ESG Reporting & Analytics
- Build data structures capable of supporting greenhouse-gas inventories across Scope 1, Scope 2, and relevant Scope 3 categories.
- Enable reporting and analytics aligned with corporate ESG commitments and applicable disclosure requirements.
- Support data requirements associated with frameworks and standards such as the GHG Protocol, CDP, ISSB, and other applicable ESG reporting requirements.
- Partner with analytics and visualization teams to create trusted datasets for dashboards and executive reporting.
- Enable efficient responses to ESG data requests from customers, investors, regulators, and other stakeholders.
- Integrate ESG data from enterprise platforms such as ERP, procurement, facilities, manufacturing, HR, finance, travel, and supplier systems.
- Work with enterprise architects and data-platform teams to ensure ESG solutions align with broader data architecture and governance standards.
- Design APIs, interfaces, or automated exchange mechanisms where appropriate for third-party ESG data providers.
- Contribute to the development of a scalable ESG data architecture and roadmap.
Technical Documentation & Governance
- Maintain clear documentation of data pipelines, transformation logic, calculation methodologies, schemas, dependencies, and controls.
- Apply software engineering practices including version control, testing, peer review, CI/CD, and production monitoring.
- Support appropriate access controls and handling of confidential or sensitive ESG and enterprise information.
- Work with business and technical stakeholders to establish clear ownership and stewardship for critical ESG datasets.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, data engineering, information systems, engineering, environmental data science, or a related quantitative discipline.
- 3+ years of experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, data architecture, or a related technical role.
- Strong proficiency in SQL and Python.
- Experience developing ETL/ELT pipelines and working with modern data platforms.
- Experience with data modeling, data-quality testing, orchestration, and production data workflows.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
- Experience working with APIs and integrating data from heterogeneous enterprise systems.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
Preferred
- Experience working with ESG, sustainability, climate, environmental, or carbon-accounting datasets.
- Knowledge of greenhouse-gas accounting, including Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions.
- Experience within pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, healthcare, manufacturing, or another regulated industry.
- Experience with platforms and technologies such as Snowflake, Databricks, dbt, Airflow, Azure Data Factory, AWS, or equivalent technologies.
- Familiarity with enterprise systems such as SAP and major procurement, facilities, or HR platforms.
- Understanding of ESG reporting frameworks, data controls, assurance, and audit requirements.
- Experience building data products that support regulatory or externally assured reporting.
Success in This Role
Success will be demonstrated by increased automation of ESG data processes, improved data quality and traceability, shorter reporting cycles, reduced reliance on manual spreadsheets, and the creation of a scalable and trusted ESG data foundation that supports both external reporting and business decision-making.
