Job description

Position Overview

Houston Water/Wastewater Operations – 100 Japhet St, Houston, TX 77020, USA. Rotating schedule, 7:00 am – 4:00 pm, subject to change.

Description of Duties / Essential Functions
  • Operate light, medium, or heavy equipment and trucks to transport personnel, equipment, and materials to and from work sites.
  • Operate power tools and hand tools to perform tasks such as spraying, landscaping, moving furniture, infrastructure repairs, mowing, asphalt work, fabricating, and cleaning and repairing sewer mains.
  • Provide maintenance and mechanical service for wastewater utility services, troubleshooting utility problems and responding to public complaints via the city tablet.
  • Operate light equipment including air compressors, barricade/prop trucks, concrete mixers, saws, portable flat‑bed sign plotters, forklift (small, even surface), message boards, pneumatic jack hammers, portable gas generators, stake bed utility trucks, hydraulic lifts, and repair hand tools.
  • Maintain, clean, and service equipment, vehicles, tools, and facilities; inspect vehicles for supplies, materials, and equipment.
  • Observe and follow all safety procedures and precautions in operating equipment and tools at work sites.
  • May act as crew lead, coordinating and monitoring work assignments and personnel.
  • Prepare and maintain reports, forms, and records of assignments, service calls, and repairs using a data tracking system.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions

This position routinely requires stooping, bending, and/or lifting 30–80 lb. Items with occasional walking on rough surfaces. Exposure to heat, cold, moisture, air pollution, chemical substances, and minor physical trauma such as cuts, bruises, and burns.

Minimum Requirements
  • Education: High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent with ability to read, write, add, subtract, and follow oral and basic written instructions. Specialized courses or training in construction equipment operation may supplement.
  • Experience: Six (6) months of manual and field work using power tools or equipment.
  • License: Valid Texas driver’s license. Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) may be required based on equipment operated.

Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants who possess the necessary qualifications, are among the most qualified candidates, and meet all other factors as outlined in Executive Order 1‑6.

Yes. The position is subject to random drug testing. Promotable positions require a passing assignment drug test.

Salary Information

Factors used in determining the salary include the applicant’s qualifications and pay rates of other employees in this classification. Pay Grade: 13.
