Safely and efficiently operates heavy equipment and power tools to perform a series of skilled/manual activities and tasks and/or to transport materials, personnel, and supplies to complete work assignments. Operates heavy equipment such as (Dump Trucks, Front End Loader, Boom Truck, Truck mounted Boom Crane Lowboy, Mini-Excavator, Excavator Backhoe, Flatbed, Vac*Con and Bucket Truck) to transport equipment and/ or materials to and from work sites. Operates power tools, uses hand tools and performs a variety of skilled/manual tasks and activities, i.e. painting, infrastructure repairs, mowing, May assist with the cleaning and repair of sewer mains. Maintains, cleans, and services equipment, vehicles, tools, and facilities. Inspects vehicles for required supplies, materials, and equipment. Observe and follow safety procedures and precautions at the worksite. May investigate and respond to complaints. Prepares and maintains reports, forms, and records of assignments, service calls and/or maintenance and repairs of equipment and tools utilizing a work order system. May act as a lead on a crew and coordinate and monitor work assignments and personnel. Other duties as assigned, such as working at WWO Plants and/or lift stations.
This position routinely requires stooping, bending, and/or lifting of items of 30 - 80 pounds with occasional periods of walking on rough surfaces. There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises, and minor burns.
This is a Houston Public Works Department Emergency Management position at the Tier I Level.
Requires a High School Diploma, GED, or the ability to read, write, add, subtract, and follow oral and/or basic written instructions at a level necessary for successful job performance supplemented by specialized courses or training in the operation of the construction equipment.
Six (6) months of experience performing manual and field work with power tools or equipment are required.
Requires a valid Texas driver’s license and compliance with the City of Houston’s policy on driving. May be required to have a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) based on the type of equipment the position is assigned to operate. Preference will be given to applicants with wastewater equipment maintenance, forklift, backhoe, & crane truck experience.
Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.
