Position Description

About Harris County Flood Control District: The Flood Control District aims to reduce flooding risk in Harris County, the third most populated county in the U.S., with over 4.7 million residents, including Houston. It oversees approximately 1,500 stormwater channels, over 60 detention basins covering more than 10,000 acres, and wetlands mitigation banks like Greens Bayou.

What You Will Do

The Harris County Flood Control District seeks qualified candidates for the Equipment Operator III position. Reporting to the Crew Leader, you will operate various heavy, mid-sized, and small equipment, engines, attachments, and hand tools to maintain channels and bayous.

Essential Functions and Duties

• Operate heavy and technical equipment such as large trash trucks, airboats, skid steers, etc.
• Record daily work activities, track mileage, and complete herbicide reports.
• Perform hazard assessments, identify obstacles, and report to supervisors.
• Assist in supervising crew members when needed.
• Mix and dispense herbicides according to manufacturer instructions.
• Dislodge debris from channels, basins, and vacant lots.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

• High school diploma or G.E.D.
• Two years of related work experience.
• Valid Class “B” CDL Texas driver’s license with tank and standard shift endorsements or TDA herbicide license.

Additional Information

Physical Demands & Environmental Exposure

Frequent walking, stooping, lifting (up to 50 pounds), outdoor work in various weather conditions, and exposure to chemicals, wildlife, and noise.
