Salary and Application Details

Salary: $23.2914 - $28.6999 per hour (DOE & Q), Non-Exempt

Job Summary

Perform a variety of skilled tasks in the operation of equipment for public works activities including excavation, sanitation, construction, and loading, along with participation in maintenance and construction work.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is the full journey level class requiring independent work, judgment, and initiative. Incumbents may supervise a small crew and operate complex mechanical equipment.

Supervision

Receives general supervision; may supervise lower-level staff.

Responsibilities

• Operate various equipment such as trucks, backhoes, tractors, and loaders.
• Inspect and maintain equipment fluids and gauges.
• Assist with equipment needs and perform minor repairs.
• Use manual tools for projects and participate in site travel and material hauling.
• Install, repair, and maintain public works materials and city property.
• Ensure safety at work sites and provide technical support.
• Prepare grades, pour concrete, and assist in construction tasks.
• Complete schedules and reports.
• Respond to emergencies and perform landscaping tasks as needed.

Special Assignments

When assigned to the landfill, operate bulldozers, compactors, and other heavy equipment; maintain landfill grades and cover waste.

When assigned to Parks and Recreation, assist in park maintenance, inspections, and community engagement.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of equipment operation, public works practices, traffic laws, and safety procedures.
• Ability to perform construction, repair, and maintenance tasks.
• Ability to read blueprints, follow instructions, and work independently or in teams.

Physical and Mental Requirements

Must maintain physical condition for heavy work, deal with hazards, and establish effective working relationships.

Experience and Education

• Three years of responsible maintenance and heavy equipment operation experience.
• High school diploma or GED.

Licenses and Certifications

• Valid Texas Class A or B CDL.
• Herbicide license (or ability to obtain within 6 months) if assigned to Parks and Recreation.
