SALARY: $23.2914 - $28.6999, Hourly (DOE&Q) NON-EXEMPT

JOB SUMMARY

To perform a variety of skilled tasks in the operation of equipment for public works activities including excavation, sanitation collection, construction, loading, and related operations according to standards; and to participate in maintenance and construction work.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the full journey level class in the equipment operator series. Incumbents work independently, exercising judgment and initiative. They operate complex mechanical equipment and may provide lead supervision to a small crew of lower-level staff.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from higher management. May exercise technical supervision over lower staff.

IMPORTANT RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
  1. Operate various equipment including trucks, backhoes, tractors, and loaders for excavation, construction, and maintenance tasks.
  2. Inspect and maintain equipment fluids, gauges, and tires; report major repairs needed.
  3. Assist in identifying equipment needs and ensure availability of materials and tools.
  4. Perform minor repairs and utilize manual tools for project completion.
  5. Travel between city facilities and external agencies for site preparation and hauling.
  6. Install, repair, and maintain public works materials and city property.
  7. Ensure safety at work sites, set up barricades, and provide technical support.
  8. Assist with grading, concrete work, and site cleanup.
  9. Record daily schedules and work reports.
  10. Respond to emergency situations as needed.
  11. Perform landscaping and debris removal as requested.
  12. Operate specialized equipment when assigned to landfills or parks, such as bulldozers, compactors, and off-road trucks.
  13. Follow regulations and site plans for landfill and park operations.
  14. Participate in developing operational plans for parks and right-of-ways.
  15. Perform other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of: Equipment operation, public works practices, traffic laws, safety procedures, city policies.

Ability to: Perform skilled construction and maintenance tasks, learn city geography, maintain equipment, follow instructions, work independently or in teams, read blueprints, and operate equipment safely.

Maintain physical and mental fitness for demanding work conditions, including exposure to hazards and adverse weather.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES

At least 3 years of responsible maintenance experience with heavy construction equipment. High school diploma or GED required. Valid Texas Class A or B CDL required. Additional licenses may be required for landfill or parks roles.
