Job summary

Indian River County Board of County Commissioners in Florida seeks an experienced equipment operator to drive dump trucks, tractors, and other heavy machinery for road maintenance in Vero Beach. You will operate equipment, perform upkeep, and ensure safety on-site.

Requires a High school diploma or GED and three years of experience, or an equivalent combination. CDL with tanker/hazmat endorsements is preferred.

Qualifications

• Valid Florida Class A or B CDL with tanker and/or hazmat endorsements preferred.
• Knowledge of operation and maintenance of medium and heavy construction equipment.

Responsibilities

• Operate large and small dump trucks and tractors.
• Sweep road shoulders with tractor-mounted sweeper and mow right-of-ways.
• Haul spoil dirt and other materials for road repairs.
• Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment.
• Ensure safety and proper operation under varying weather conditions.

Indian River County

Working under the general supervision, of a Foreman or Manager operates large and small dump trucks and large and small agricultural tractors pulling half batwing mower decks. Also operates zero-turn mowers and walk behind mowers.

• Mows road right-of-ways including mowing around retention ponds associated with road right-of-ways.
• Sweeps paved road shoulders and bike lanes with a tractor-mounted sweeper.
• Operates steel wheel rollers to provide compaction of dirt and asphalt.
• Hauls spoil dirt and clean fill or other material as needed to provide repairs to roadways.
• Washes, cleans, and performs routine maintenance to equipment.

Education/Experience:

High school graduate or GED and three years of working experience, or an equivalent combination of formal education and working experience.

Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations:

• Must possess a valid Class E Driver’s License.
• A valid Florida Class A or B commercial driver's license (CDL) with tanker and/or hazmat and tanker endorsements is preferred. Holders of a Class A or B CDL are eligible for incentive pay based on the CDL license classification and endorsements.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of the safe operation and capabilities of medium and heavy construction equipment.

Knowledge of the component parts, operating principles, and maintenance needs of medium and heavy equipment.

Knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules and regulations and of effective precautionary measures to avoid accidents.

Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

Ability to move heavy objects and endure strenuous laboring tasks under varying weather conditions.

Skill in the operation of moderately complex construction and transportation equipment.
