Job summary

Sarasota County Government is seeking an Equipment Operator to operate heavy equipment and help maintain asphalt roadways, concrete surfaces, and bridges to keep roads safe daily.

The role requires a Florida CDL Class A with Tanker N endorsement, a high school diploma, and 2 years of related experience. On-call duties and benefits begin within 60 days of hire.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or its equivalent.
• Two years of experience in construction, maintenance and repair of roadways.
• Florida Class A CDL with Tanker N endorsement at hire.
• Valid Florida driver’s license at hire.

Responsibilities

• Operates heavy equipment, including dozers, loaders, graders, backhoes and other large equipment.
• Assist with installation and repair of concrete structures, sidewalks, curbs and ramps.
• Support concrete work by building forms and using power tools.
• Assist with asphalt maintenance and repair following DOT standards.
• Perform traffic control duties and set up MOT/flagging; complete work orders promptly.

About This Role

• Operates heavy equipment, including dozers (D4 or larger), front-end loaders (1.5 cubic yards or larger), motor graders, backhoes (1 cubic yard or larger), transport vehicles, long-arm mowers (23” or larger), grapple trucks, Gradall hydraulic excavators, and various trucks, tandems, and tractors with a GVW greater than 28,000 pounds, as well as other large and complex equipment
• Assist with installation and repair of concrete structures, including sidewalks, curbs, gutters, driveways, guardrails, and ADA ramps
• Support concrete work by building forms and operating power tools for preparation and finishing
• Assist with asphalt maintenance and repair, including road cuts, pothole repair, and roadway modifications in compliance with DOT standards
• Perform traffic control duties, including setting up Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) and flagging for safe work zones
• Conduct roadway and right-of-way maintenance, including debris removal, tree trimming, shoulder repairs, and grading of unpaved roads
• Operate equipment and complete work orders accurately and in a timely manner

• 6:30 a.m. - 3:0 p.m.

About You

Minimum Qualifications

• A High School Diploma or its equivalent
• Two (2) years of experience in the construction, maintenance and repair of vehicle and pedestrian travel way systems and /or road rights-of-ways areas
• State of Florida Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class “A” with Tanker “N” endorsement at the time of hire
• Valid Florida Drives license at the time of hire

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in operating equipment used for concrete, asphalt and Bridge maintenance functions in and around road rights-of-ways

Physical Demands

Must frequently lift and/or move 50 pounds.

Subject to Passing Substance Screening

This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening. An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of five (5) years.
