Position: Equipment Operator I

This role involves operating machines or vehicles equipped with blades/buckets to remove, distribute, level, or grade earth, such as a backhoe or excavator. The operator should be competent in several phases of operation, requiring instruction and guidance, and referring problems to others. The role includes developing solutions to problems of limited scope.

Responsibilities
  1. Operate machines and heavy equipment (excavator, mini excavator, skid steer, backhoe) to complete projects.
  2. Perform successive passes over the work area to achieve desired results, such as grading terrain or moving earth and rock.
  3. Align equipment with reference stakes and guidelines, and follow hand signals or directions to set depth or position equipment.
  4. Attach blades or other attachments to machines, fastening them using appropriate hitches.
  5. Connect hydraulic hoses, belts, mechanical linkages, or additional attachments.
  6. Guide equipment movement through signaling.
  7. Perform daily or weekly preventive maintenance, including greasing, oiling, and minor repairs.
  8. Comply with safety and utility locating regulations, including OSHA standards.
  9. Control operations of equipment or systems.
  10. Select appropriate tools and equipment for tasks.
  11. Repair machines or systems using proper tools.
  12. Perform routine maintenance and identify when maintenance is needed.
  13. Monitor gauges and indicators to ensure proper machine functioning.
Qualifications
  • At least 1 year of experience as an Equipment Operator with a high school diploma or GED.
  • Experience operating heavy equipment such as excavators, skid steers, and backhoes.
  • Certifications in operating equipment.
Abilities
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move objects up to 50 pounds, demonstrating physical strength and stamina.
  • Ability to relocate a 12-foot stepladder without assistance.
  • Work at heights up to 60 feet, climbing and balancing on scaffolds, lifts, and ladders.
  • Perform physical tasks including walking, climbing, lifting, squatting, crawling, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and reaching overhead.
  • Good vision (corrected if necessary), color vision, hearing, and communication skills in English.
  • Use ladders safely while carrying tools.
  • Recognize issues or potential problems.
  • Apply general rules to specific problems to produce logical answers.
  • Combine information to form general conclusions, even among seemingly unrelated events.
  • See details at close range.
  • Understand spoken information and ideas effectively.
