Job summary

Kiewit Mining District in Idaho is offering an Equipment/Mechanical Engineer Intern position for summer 2027. You will support planning, scheduling, budgeting, and reliability of a construction and mining equipment fleet, with focus on improving equipment reliability and preventative maintenance programs.

The internship provides hands-on learning, travel opportunities, and exposure to field operations; start May–June 2027 and potential relocation depending on work sites.

Qualifications

• Pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET), Diesel Technology, or Automotive Technology.
• Ability to travel or relocate as needed and work full-time during the summer (May–August).
• Strong ethics, safety focus, and effective communication and teamwork.

Responsibilities

• Understand and comply with federal, state, and company health, safety, and environmental requirements.
• Material handling and procurement.
• Create and maintain tool/filter lists and documentation.
• Inspections of equipment and parts.
• Logistics management and communication.
• Long/short range equipment planning, scheduling, and budgeting.
• Planning and paperwork processing for critical lifts.
• Use reliability and failure analysis data to increase equipment availability and reliability.
• Establish and maintain communications between all levels of supervision and management.
• Support craft maintenance technicians – ordering parts, manage inventory, schedule crews, and manage quality and safety.
• Specialty projects as needed.
