A leading insurance company is seeking an Equipment Breakdown Risk Engineer to support risk consulting operations in Columbia, MD. This remote role requires evaluations of equipment for commercial insurance clients, involving inspections and communication of risk improvement recommendations while building relationships with service teams. Candidates should possess relevant experience and credentials, and the role includes field travel.
We are currently seeking applicants for an Equipment Breakdown Risk Engineer (EBRE) for our Columbia, MD branch operations. The EBRE professional operates within the Risk Consulting Department and is considered an integral component of the value-added services provided to our commercial insurance policyholders. The position reports to the Mid-Atlantic Region Branch Manager and supports our Maryland and Washington DC territories.
The primary focus of this position is to perform risk evaluations, assess exposures and controls, develop meaningful loss estimates, and communicate findings to business partners. Responsibilities include applying critical thinking to determine the adequacy of controls, the likelihood and magnitude of loss, and overall insurability. The individual will conduct boiler and pressure vessel inspections according to jurisdictional rules, perform thorough examinations, identify hazardous conditions, apply relevant codes and standards, recommend corrective actions, and submit reports. Communication with customers about how these recommendations impact their business and appropriate courses of action is essential. The role also involves claims investigations—evaluating the elements of accidents, extent of damage, damage verification, invoice review, and cause of loss. Additionally, the individual will provide risk improvement services, identify exposures with significant loss potential, investigate losses, and evaluate preventative maintenance programs. Written reports will include evaluations of machinery breakdown and business interruption exposures to assist underwriters in risk assessment and premium setting.
This is a remote-based role with field travel required.
