Position: ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE SPECIALIST 1-3 / Compliance Assistant Coordinator

Location: 1110 W. Washington Street, Phoenix, AZ 85007

Water Quality Division

Salary: Level 1 $45K-$50K, Level 2 $50K-$60K, Level 3 $65K-$70K

Grade: 20, 21, 22

Job Summary:

We are committed to ensuring the safety of our communities by providing clean and safe drinking water. As a Compliance Assistance Coordinator (CAC) within the Safe Drinking Water Section, you will serve as a subject matter expert and liaison between the regulated community, the public, and our agency.

This position offers remote work options within Arizona, including virtual arrangements.

Job Duties:
  • Serve as an expert on the Safe Drinking Water Act and related regulations, providing guidance to ADEQ staff, water system owners, operators, and stakeholders.
  • Assist water systems, certified operators, and responsible parties in ensuring compliance with laws and regulations.
  • Respond to water quality issues and collaborate with enforcement officers on violations.
  • Review sampling plans, Consumer Confidence Reports, and other reports for accuracy.
  • Analyze water quality data to assess validity and interpret environmental impacts.
  • Present at outreach events and provide training to operators and owners.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Excellent customer service, communication, and interpretation skills regarding drinking water rules.
  • Familiarity with the Safe Drinking Water Act, Arizona regulations, and agency policies.
  • Knowledge of Arizona’s water industry and environmental enforcement processes.
  • Experience or certifications in water systems, environmental risk, public health, or related fields is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with Lean methodologies for process improvement.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant sciences or engineering.
  • Experience levels vary from 0-2 years (Level 1) to 5+ years (Level 3), with substitutions for higher degrees.
  • Level 3 applicants must obtain a professional certification within six months.
Pre-Employment Requirements:

Driving or vehicle use may be required; a valid driver’s license is necessary. All new hires must complete E-Verify.
