ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE SPECIALIST 1-3 Compliance Assistant Coordinator

Job Location: 1110 W. Washington Street, Phoenix, AZ 85007

Water Quality Division Posting Details: Salary: Level 1 $45K-$50K, Level 2 $50K-$60K, Level 3 $65K-$70K

Grade: 20, 21, 22

Job Summary:

We are committed to ensuring the safety of our communities by providing clean and safe drinking water. As a Compliance Assistance Coordinator (CAC) within the Safe Drinking Water Section, you will serve as a subject matter expert and liaison between the regulated community, the public, and our agency.

This position is available for remote work on a full-time basis within Arizona (including virtual office arrangements).

The State of Arizona strives for a work culture that affords employees flexibility, autonomy, and trust. All work should be performed within Arizona unless an exception is authorized in advance.

Job Duties:
  • Serve as an expert on the Safe Drinking Water Act and related regulations, providing guidance to ADEQ staff, public water system owners, operators, and stakeholders.
  • Assist public water systems, certified operators, and responsible parties in ensuring compliance with laws and regulations.
  • Respond to drinking water quality issues and collaborate with enforcement officers to escalate violations when necessary.
  • Review water system sampling plans, Consumer Confidence Reports, and other reports for accuracy and completeness.
  • Analyze water quality data to determine validity and scientific significance, interpreting data in context of environmental effects.
  • Present at outreach events statewide, both in person and virtually, and provide training to operators and owners.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
  • Strong customer service skills, with the ability to interpret drinking water rules and communicate clearly.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Familiarity with the Safe Drinking Water Act, Arizona Administrative Code, and agency policies.
  • Knowledge of Arizona’s drinking water industry and environmental enforcement processes.
  • Experience or certifications in water system operations, environmental risk, public health, or related fields is advantageous.
  • Ability in environmental inspections, compliance, and conflict resolution is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Lean methodologies for process improvement.
Selective Preferences:
  • Bachelor’s degree in related fields.
  • Experience levels vary from 0-2 years to 5+ years, with certifications or a Master’s degree substituting for experience as specified.
Pre-Employment Requirements:

Driver’s License required if driving is essential for the role. All new hires must complete E-Verify.
