Job summary

Abilene Zoological Gardens seeks an Assistant Laboratory Manager to coordinate daily Environmental Laboratory operations under the Division Manager. You will guide workflow, manage resources, ensure safety, and resolve issues for continuous laboratory services.

You will supervise laboratory technicians, coordinate equipment maintenance, inventory, vendor service visits, and support audits, safety programs, and operational planning within a city laboratory setting in Abilene, TX.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, microbiology, environmental science, engineering or related field is required.
• Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in a laboratory setting is preferred.
• Texas driver’s license required or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate day-to-day laboratory activities, analytical priorities, and work assignments based on workload and operational needs.
• Monitor workflow and adjust priorities to maintain continuity of laboratory services.
• Coordinate equipment maintenance, repairs, and service activities and communicate status to stakeholders.
• Serve as primary operational coordination point for equipment vendors and service providers.
• Manage laboratory inventory and ordering to ensure adequate supplies and equipment.
• Coordinate facility IT needs affecting laboratory operations and follow through on service requests.
• Collaborate with Technical Managers to ensure resources and support for analyses.
• Develop, implement, and maintain laboratory procedures and workflows.
• Identify inefficiencies and implement improvements to lab processes and utilization of resources.
• Support safety activities and compliance with lab procedures and city policies.
• Assist with audits, inspections, accreditation actions, and other compliance-related projects.
• Collect and evaluate workload, turnaround, equipment status, and inventory data for management decisions.
• Communicate significant operational issues to the Laboratory Manager.
• Assist Division Manager with planning and special projects and provide continuity in absence.
