Job summary

MoDOT in Jefferson City is seeking an Environmental Intern to assist the environmental studies unit with regulatory compliance tasks under direct supervision. The role focuses on evaluating projects, preparing reports, and supporting field investigations as needed.

Work hours are Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with a wage-only, non-benefits eligible arrangement and a maximum of 1,039 hours per year; interns gain exposure to state and federal environmental standards and

Qualifications

• Must be enrolled in a relevant bachelor’s or post-bachelor’s degree program full time (12+ credit hours).
• Must possess, and maintain, an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher out of 4.0.
• 30 credit hours completed/accepted toward current degree program. High school or other postsecondary program credits must be shown to be accepted by the current program through a degree transcript to apply.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate projects for environmental impacts and compliance with state, federal and organizational guidelines; present information to department staff through frequent and regular communications; make recommendations regarding the need to avoid or minimize environmental impacts or develop compensatory mitigation plans.
• Prepare, edit, and review internal reports, correspondence, and graphic materials as it relates to environmental regulations, requirements, or other environmental issues; including follow up on permit requests as assigned.
• Obtain detailed information from environmental staff and district personnel to develop, write and edit technical reports in accordance with department policies and practices for approval by the Federal Highway Administration and other agencies.
• Research topics concerning federal or state legislation, regulatory agency guidance, and performs literature or computer searches on various environmental topics; provide technical assistance in understanding and complying with state, federal, and organizational environmental standards and regulations, and participate on project core teams.
• May assist with field investigations and analysis regarding floodplain, wetlands and parkland evaluations, endangered species, pollinators, plants, noise assessments, land use determinations, or socio-economic studies.
• Performs other responsibilities as required or assigned.
